Palak Paneer

‘Palak Paneer‘ or Cottage cheese dumpling in spinach sauce is the easiest recipe of the whole world.All you need is some blanched greens,onion tomato puree and some cottage cheese.Voila! you have the magic wand! This simple dish can rock your party.You also charm your kids into eating the absolute necessary greens.

What makes this recipe so healthy?

Greens ensure no hemoglobin deficiency, anemia and color blindness.It also is great for pregnant women and those who need immunity to fight all the ailments.Spinach is also great for digestion. Paneer is a rich source of protein and calcium.It also Improves metabolism.It is rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.Great for diabetics,cancer prevention and reduces risk of heart diseases

You may also mix spinach  and small quantities of fenugreek and amaranth leaves to further increase the nutrient contents.

For vegan alternative, use tofu instead of paneer.

How to make Paneer at home?

It is easily available in market.However, you may make it at home easily using the above link.

Home made cottage cheese needs to be strained in order to remove excess water and set into blocks as available in market to be used for this recipe.

Palak Paneer


  • 1 large bunch of Spinach leaves(or 1 small bunch of Amaranth/fenugreek leaves + 1 bunch spinach)
  • 1 onion medium size
  • 2 tomatoes diced
  • 400 grams cottage cheese
  • 2 tbsp ghee/ clarified butter or oil
  • 2 tbsp curd or yogurt
  • 1 tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • Pinch of turmeric
  • 1 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala


  1. For the cottage cheese:
  2. Cut the cottage cheese into small cubes.
  3. You may fry them slightly in 1 tbsp oil.
  4. Keep it aside.
  5. For the spinach sauce:
  6. Blanch the spinach and greens(if using amaranth and fenugreek)
  7. For curry:
  8. Heat a pan and add ghee/oil to it.
  9. Add cumin seeds,green chillies,garlic pods to it and saute'.
  10. Now add the onions and saute' till they turn pink.
  11. Add tomatoes and stir 2-3 times until they soften.
  12. Add spinach sauce to it along with spices and let it come to a boil.
  13. Now, add fried cottage cheese to this puree and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes.
  14. Serve hot with 'Jeera' rice/steamed rice or 'tandoori Roti'/Indian flat bread

!Note: Do not add onions and garlic to the recipe to make Jain 'palak paneer', . Heat ghee in a pan and add cumin seeds,pureed tomatoes before proceeding with spinach puree. You can also use 2 bunches of spinach instead of Amaranth leaves if they are not available easily. Replace paneer with tofu and ghee with oil to make it vegan.
