What makes beetroot biryani special?

Beetroot biryani is a great way of having beets.You will love it although you may hate eating it.Although, dry curries are also a way of eating it.South Indian cuisine has great curries.However, you can try this for a change.

Benefits of beetroot

Beetroot brings out the most passionate reactions in people.You either love it or you hate.No matter what you feel, it is a healthy alternative to tablets.It is a great source of fiber and potassium.It gives a vibrant red color to the food.It is an excellent source of folate.

Why we love biryani??

There is nothing better than a biryani.Perfect one pot meal.One dish to suit all friends. wonder.It has oodles of nutrition.Always a crowd favorite. Everyone loves a biryani.

In conclusion,  vegan,vegetarian,non-vegetarian,lacto-ova vegetarian, biryani pleases all!

I am off meat and eggs so,I love my vegan/vegetarian version.

Although some people may still say a biryani without meat is a pulao/pilaf.

I still am happy vegetarian!

My take: Why should one kill another just to have a meal.After all,Every living being deserves a life.

This recipe is from my BIL Aditya who is a practicing vegan. One of the best biryani I have had.

Note: Please check with your doctor before you incorporate beets in your diet .
It is always better to check if you are allergic.Some people may not be able to digest it them raw.You may have an averse reaction like cramps.

Beetroot Biryani


  • 2-3 tbsp oil
  • 2 onion medium sized sliced
  • 1 tbsp. ginger garlic paste
  • 1/4 cup beetroot, roughly chopped
  • 1/4th cup coriander and 1/4th cup mint leaves
  • 1 green chilly, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup beetroot shredded
  • 1 cup carrot shredded
  • 2 cups basmati rice(cooked upto 70%)
  • 1/2 cup peas
  • 1 tbsp ghee(optional,please avoid it if you are making it vegan)
  • 1 tbsp. cumin seeds
  • 2-3 bay leaves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 black cardamom
  • 2 tbsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp red chilly powder
  • Salt as per taste


  1. In a heavy bottomed pan or pot,heat oil.
  2. Add cumin seeds with whole spices.
  3. Once they splutter, add onions.Saute them well with 1/2 tsp salt.
  4. Cover the pan and saute for 10 minutes on low flame until soft.
  5. Add ginger garlic paste,green chillies and beetroot chunks. Saute for 5 minutes
  6. Add garam masala powder with mint and coriander leaves and mix well.
  7. Now add the shredded carrot.
  8. Add salt,red chilly powder and let it cook for 3-4 minutes.
  9. Add coconut milk and mix well.
  10. Meanwhile, in a pot with boiling water
  11. Add rice & salt.Cook the rice for 8-10 minutes.
  12. Drain the excess water,layer the cooked rice evenly.
  13. Add 1 tbsp ghee on top. (Avoid if you are lactose intolerant or going vegan).
  14. Garnish with peas before giving it a dum(Close the pot with a heavy lid or seal it with kneaded dough)
  15. Let it cook for 8-10 minutes on low flame.
  16. Serve hot.
