Indians do a lot of intermittent fasting.Vrat is an important part of Hinduism.Most people fast depending on their devotion. Some do it monthly while others weekly.Some do it every ekadashi / 11th day of the monthly calendar.Others fast every full moon/Poornima.Some communities even do it on weekly basis.

Mostly women fast once a week and some men do it too depending on their choice.My uncle fasts every Thursday which is very rare to hear.There are others who do it once a month.However,children,pregnant women,lactating mothers and aged people are excused from fasting due to health constraints

Chaturmas or the holy months of festivals begin with Saavan or rainy season.During this month,many people avoid nonveg and eggs.

Some do it during specific months like Navratri.

Most festivals follow few guidelines and prepare one time meals accordingly.

Common rules of fasting or Vrat

During fasting people eat sendha namak(rock salt) instead of normal salt.

However, In some types of fast,even salt is avoided.

People eat limited root vegetables.Wheat and rice are avoided.

Only gluten-free flours and some specific millets are eaten.All other grains,lentils are avoided.

Dairy is generally allowed as many people like to have tea,coffee and yogurt.

However,we do not consume eggs,fish and other non-vegetarian items.

We use only minimal spices like cumin,ginger,dried mango powder,black pepper and green chillies.All remaining spices are avoided.

Basically, a time to pray and meditate and practice self control.Give your body, especially stomach a rest and tongue too 🙂
