Sewiyan aloo/Seyun Patata recipe

Usually vermicelli is cooked to make kheer,however,this dish with fried potatoes has a fan-following of its own.

  • frying pan for seviyan
  • Air fryer for low oil patata if you do not want to fry them as in traditional method.


For sweet vermicelli/ seyun

  • 150 gm seviya or vermicelli
  • 3 tablespoon ghee/oil for vegan
  • 2 teaspoon elaichi/cardamom
  • 2 cup water
  • ¼ cup sugar

For Garnish

  • 4-5 Almonds blanched and peeled (Optional)
  • 3-4 Pistachios crushed Optional

For patata/ Sindhi style crispy potatoes

  • 2 medium potatoes chopped


  • ¼ teaspoon turmeric powder
  • ½ teaspoon red chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • ½ teaspoon amchur/ dried mango powder
  • Salt as per taste


For sewiyan/seyun

  • Heat ghee in a pan and roast seviyan for couple of minutes. You can also heat roasted seviyan for this in 1 tablespoon of ghee.
  • Add cardamom powder and mix well until its nice and brown.
  • Add water to it and stir well.
  • Now, add sugar  and stir it well.
  • Cover the pan. Let it simmer on a low flame until sugar is dissolved and seviyan is light and soft.
  • Keep it aside. Serve warm after garnishing with sliced almonds and cashews as per your choice. Serve with fried potatoes in a plate.

For air fryer patata/aloo

  • Soak chopped potatoes in water for 30 mins.
  • Drain the water and place it in air fryer basket.
  • Air fry at 190 degree C for 10 mins.
  • Spray oil or brush 1 teaspoon oil and air fry for 7-8 mins.
  • Mix all the spices in a bowl.
  • Sprinkle this on air fried patata in a bowl. Serve hot with sweet seviyan.


Seyun patata can be made with oil if you want to make it vegan, else tempering with ghee works.
