Fried ice cream especially chocolate ice cream coated with Oreos is a thing of joy. I had first heard of fried ice cream being sold in Singapore. It was only later I came to know that it has been a speciality in Japan since 1960s. It is also known as tempura ice cream. Originally, vanilla ice cream is coated with bread crumbs and fried to perfection. It is also very popular in American Mexican restaurants.
Anyway, it may be invented by anyone, but it sure is a thing to try. Here, we have made our own delightful fried ice cream by frying homemade vegan chocolate ice cream after coating it with Oreos twice. What is not to love! Best part : We have used an air fryer to fry it instead of a normal frying. Hence, you enjoy your dessert more than worrying about additional calories in it.

Fried ice cream recipe
Equipment

- muffin liner (trim the edges)
- Food processor / grinder
Ingredients
- 1 packet Oreos
- 1 tub chocolate ice cream or any ice cream
Instructions
- Crush Oreo cookies in food processor.
- Grind it into a coarse mixture in a food processor.
- Scoop your chocolate ice cream and coat it with powdered Oreos.
- Roll it until the ice cream is evenly coated.
- Transfer it to a freezer safe box. Freeze it for at least 1 hour.
- Coat the frozen ice cream balls for the 2nd time. Freeze it for atleast 1 more hour or overnight
- Preheat the air fryer for 5 mins at 180 deg C| 350 deg F. Place each ball on a muffin liner. (trim the edges)
- Air fry it for 1 min at 180 C | 350 F. Serve immediately.

Variations & Substitutions
- You can use any ice-cream for ice-cream balls like strawberry, vanilla etc.
- You can also use bread crumbs to make tempura fried ice cream. Use vanilla ice cream for ice cream balls. Use any biscuit crumbs to make cookie powder.
- You can also fry these ice cream balls in a stove based frying pan if you do not have an air fryer. However, you need to be careful as it might cause the oil to splash a bit more.
Storage
- Freeze the ice cream balls by coating it in cookie mixture, twice as per the above steps. Store it in a freezer safe air tight box. Place in muffin liners and air fry whenever you wish to serve.
FAQs
You can freeze fried ice cream individually by wrapping it in cling film. It can be stored up to a week.
Not all ice cream have eggs. However, it is best to check your labels in case of allergies.

The texture of the ice cream is gooey. however it is not close to the deep fried ones that get in the stores.
One of the recipes that I wish could be done better in the airfryer.
