    Italian style flat green beans | romano bean recipe

    Romano beans are Italian flat beans which are juicy and tender.They belong to the same family as French haricots verts and yellow wax beans. They are a garden variety string beans which cook really fast. Other names of these beans are helda beans, pole beans or runner beans and sem phali in India. Apart from italian-style green beans, you can make indian style aloo beans and make a air fryer frozen beans as a great side dish.

Add it to various other recipes like hariyali pulao, veg fried rice, veg jalfrezi, perfect for dinner parties as a main dish. Cooked green beans provide the necessary green colors and are a great option for getting your  vitamins A, B,C, K, and folate.

    Equipment

    • saucepan
    • pan
    • Food processor optional

    Ingredients

    • 500 gms flat beans or any other raw beans you like
    • 4 cups water for cooking beans
    • 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
    • 1 medium onion
    • 3-4 cloves garlic finely chopped
    • 1-2 medium tomatoes chopped
    • salt and black pepper as per taste

    Instructions

    • Wash well and remove the strings of the flat beans and chop them.
    • Boil water in a saucepan on medium heat. Soak the green beans for 10 minutes and drain the excess water.
    • Heat oil in a pan and saute garlic. Add onions and let it sweat with little salt.
    • Add beans with a teaspoon salt.
    • Cover and cook for 5-7 mins.
    • Once done ,add chopped tomatoes with pepper, cover and cook for 5-7 minutes.
    • Turn off the heat. Serve warm with crusty bread.

    Turn off the heat. Optionally add a teaspoon of lemon juice on top , for a dose of vitamin C. Serve warm with a crusty baguette.

    Hint: Drizzle some goat cheese or parmesan cheese on top instead of lemon zest if non vegan.

    Substitutions and Variations

    • You can cook French haricots verts and yellow wax beans in a similar fashion as they belong to the same family. If you do not have fresh romano beans you can use canned green beans or grab a packet of italian flat green beans from the frozen section next time from the supermarket.
    • This side dish recipe can be made with regular string beans or different type of beans like fava beans or italian broad beans, snap beans.
    • Spicy -  add red pepper flakes  while cooking to imbue heat into the dish, or paprika for the smoked sweet flavor.
    • You can add olives, chopped red peppers and can of crushed tomatoes to make your own braised flat beans. Tastes heavenly! 
    • You may avoid adding onions to this recipe and just cook it in garlic and pepper.
    • Some people also like to add chopped potatoes to this recipe.
    • You can also add some breadcrumbs to this recipe.

    Storage

    Store leftover green beans in air tight container in the refrigerator.  You can also freeze them in airtight container for later.

    Top tip

    You could add a tbsp. balsamic vinegar to this recipe.
