Dhaba Style Matar Paneer

Dhaba Style Matar Paneer is a simple recipe yet has a fabulous fan following.

It is a traditional Punjabi recipe where we cook paneer/cottage cheese cubes in a tomato sauce with generous quantity of peas.

You can pair it with any flatbread or rice.

Amateur cooks or bachelors can cook this curry very easily and have a hotel like meal at home.

All you need is some paneer.

You can buy paneer cubes from any dairy or make your own paneer at home.

Keeping some paneer at home always helps,when guests come at a short notice.It is versatile and can be used to cook various dishes for a party.

Be it appetizers like chilli paneer or paneer tikka one pot dishes like Paneer Biryani and even sweets like Chenna Pudo , Rassogulla or Rajbhog.

Dhaba Style Matar Paneer


  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp green chilli chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 1.5 cup tomato puree
  • 250 gram paneer or cottage cheese
  • 1 cup peas
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp curd
  • 1 tsp red chilly powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp kasuri methi/dried fenugreek leaves (optional)
  • Salt as per taste
  • For Garnish: 1 tbsp chopped coriander


  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Cook ginger,chillies,onions & salt until brown.
  • Add tomato puree,spices&salt.Cook for 5 mins.
  • Add yogurt.
  • Cook until oil oozes out.
  • Add paneer cubes,peas & mix well.
  • Add salt along with 1 cup water.Cook for 5 mins.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander
  • Serve hot with roti or rice.

Optionally you may fry paneer cubes before adding to the curry. If you do not have paneer handy,you may use haloumi. For vegan option,replace paneer with tofu and replace yogurt with 1 tbsp chickpea flour.
