What is Ganesh Chaturthi? How to make eco-friendly Ganesha idol?
Ganesha chaturthi is a 10 day long Indian festival which is celebrated to mark the birth of Shri Ganesha. Most people bring the Ganpati idol home and pray for the wellbeing for the family. We keep it for either 1.5 days, 3,5,7 or 10 days. Later we do the visarjan where we immerse the idol in a water body. Initially, Lord Ganesha idols were made of clay but with time this was being made with PoP or plaster of Paris. Now, with eco friendly idols back in the trend, people are now moving back to roots and making idols at home to avoid water pollution. Nowadays man made ponds are also used for visarjan or we can do it in a pot.

Traditional Ukadiche modak : This is a gluten free steamed dessert. We make it with a filling of coconut jaggery stuffing and spices like cardamom powder, nutmeg, poppy seeds enclosed in a rice flour pastry. No mould no problem. Make a round sweet. Coconut stuffing is enclosed in the rice flour bonda as a round sweet dumpling, in the south Indian variation.
Mawa modak: Another popular variety where modak made with instant mawa or khoya and food colors or natural fruit puree or chocolate. I love making Chocolate mawa modak for Ganesh chaviti.
Mawa modak(with only milk powder): You can make the mawa modak, without making khoya too. Just add required milk powder to fruit puree like strawberry. This recipe is much simpler and tastes great. It does not have heavy cream which is great when you are on a diet. Also, great when if you do not have time to make traditional or instant unsweetened mawa or do not have an option to buy it from local dairy.
Air fried modak : Made with the same filling as Ukadiche modak, but in a casing of whole wheat flour or atta, semolina. We usually fry in ghee or oil. Here we have made a low oil version by using an air fryer.
Conclusion : You can still offer homemade sweets to Ganpathi ji in the festive season, even if you do not have time to make your gulab jamun and besan laddoo. Some other easy festive treat recipes are murmura laddu and chocolate burfi.
